7.23.11
It's the Eleventh Doctor and Amelia Pond! Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were in San Diego for SDCC, and they did a Nerdist Podcast with Chris Hardwick just up the road from SDCC. I was able to score tickets along with some of my friends, Cerissa and Shar. We had pretty good seats, and the mic stands were really in the way, but it was incredible!! I had so much fun, and Wil Wheaton was there too and he brought things to a whole new level of awesome. I had such a great, great night.
Day 2 overview under the cut.
I slept in a bit this morning. Karen had gone to SDCC early, so my plan was to wake up whenever and take the shuttle. I went to the front of the hotel to ask the concierge where the shuttle meets and he recommended I take a cab and pointed out the gentleman next to me was waiting for a cab to the convention center. I asked if he would like to share a cab and I would pay for half and he agreed. He was a nice guy and the cab ride definitely beat out the shuttle which I found out made multiple stops and made you change busses. I don't know what for, but I was more than willing to pay $10 to share a cab. The day was uneventful. I checked in at HQ but wasnt really on the schedule. Myself and a handful of others were on Wendy's "Black Ops" team, which meant we were kind of VIP of the volunteers. We are those who know or have worked with Zac and The Nerd Machine, or Wendy personally and we were trusted with the more sensitive tasks (anything dealing with celebs or VIP stuff, etc), so most of our schedules were looser than others (though to be honest, the whole schedule kind of got messed up). I spent some of the afternoon with my dear friend Sue and some of the other Red Shirt crew. I worked at the Nathan Fillion panel which was fun. I had a bit of a breakdown part way through the day. Things were really a mess, and I was still really frazzled from the night before and working the VIP line. I ended up talking to Wendy and bolting early because I felt I just needed to get away. I was excited for the Doctor Who Nerdist Podcast and decided to start walking to that theatre (which turned out to be a lot farther than I thought! about 12 blocks farther). It worked out great because Cerissa arrived around the same time and there was already a decent sized queue outside. I found Cerissa's friend and called Shar and warned her to make her way up so she could hop in the queue with me so we could get seats with each other. The podcast was incredible. Chris Hardwick had us all in stitches before he even brought out guests. I was really surprised and happily so when he brought out Wil Wheaton. Wil was so funny. He and Chris bounced off of each other; evidence of their long time friendship, no doubt.
The podcast was awesome and after I had a minor scare as my cell phone had dropped out of my bag and I was worried I lost it for good. I got back into the theatre and found it (thank all that is holy!), but by the time I made my way outside again I had lost my friends. Cerissa ended up having to bounce out because her friend got really sick, which was a bummer. I ended up just heading back to NerdHQ. My good mood quickly dropped as I was not ready to be back there. There was the Nerd Tweet Up happening, and I found my dear sweet Kellie Jane, who was already 3 gin and tonics into her night, and met a few other Twitter friends. I ended up somehow becoming the drink babysitter to people who walked away and never came back, but once I finished my drink I went next door to the NerdHQ check in room and hung out with Wendy. There was a VIP party going on upstairs. Kind of a second Nerd Party but waaaaay less crazy. Wendy was the only one of the Red Shirts that got on the list to go upstairs, but she had some stuff to get done. We ended up talking for a while about things going on with the volunteers, and people being upset with the people running NerdHQ and some of the big problems that were going on. After a long talk I told Wendy to get upstairs and have some fun. I walked her out and decided I was just going to find a way back to the hotel, but Wendy decided to get me into the party and we went upstairs. I felt awkward the moment I got there. I was in a funk and I felt like I didn't belong, and i was still wearing my NerdHQ uniform and it took a bit but Wendy pulled me on the dance floor and after a while I really started to enjoy myself. There were loads of actors and actresses I recognized and it was a really intimate gathering with a lot of amazing people I adore. I was really upset the previous night because one person I really wanted to see and meet was Kevin Alejandro. I didnt realize last night when I was sitting on the curb stressed from the crazy night that he was just across the street for a long time. Karen and Joyce saw him but didn't realize I hadnt. I was bummed when I found out I'd missed him. I didn't know if he was at the party tonight, but once I got to dancing I didn't care, I was having fun. At one point, I was dancing, and a guy walks past me but then turns around and starts dancing with me. I look up at him and we start making silly faces at each other while we were dancing, then he just turned around and continued walking in the direction he was originally heading. It took me a moment but then I realized it was Kevin Alejandro. It was such a cool moment, one I wish I could record in my brain and play it over and over. As the night went on, even though my feet and legs hurt from being on them for nearly 2 days straight, I didn't care. I was dancing and having a great time. I danced with Wendy, and Zac, and the girls and strangers and it was just so much fun. Watching some A-listers get down was awesome. Highlight of the night was watching Joss Whedon dance. It made me appreciate him so much more than I thought I could. I was hanging out on the patio with Zac and I saw Kevin Alejandro across the way, but I never got the opportunity to go talk to him. We made eye contact a few times at the party and exchanged smiles, and of course the dance, but I didn't get to actually talk to him, but it's okay.
I went with Tess and Wendy back to their hotel room then caught a cab to my hotel. It was an incredible night that definitely warranted another hot shower and few hours of sleep. My mood had absolutely been turned around, and knowing Wendy appreciated the hard work I put on the VIP line during the Nerd Party was appreciated and while she didn't have to get me into the VIP party during the Tweet Up, I am glad she did. I am not sure I would have made it through Sunday if my spirits hadn't been lifted.
