One of the first people I see at SDCC. This guy was the greatest Doctor Who cos player I think I've ever seen. I really did a double take. The Tenth Doctor isn't an easy one, but he absolutely pulled it off. I've seen several pictures of him at SDCC besides mine and the boy looks good.
Below the jump is my account of Day 1. You don't have to read it. I wanted to record it while I remembered so that I can come back and read it in the future.
Day 1, for me, of SDCC consisted of a lot of running around. I started my journey around 2:30am when I got out of bed and finished packing and getting ready. My awesome roommate Jazz drove me to the underground station so that I didn't have to take a cab. The first train wasn't until 4am, so I had to wait there for a bit. I was sketched at first, there was a guy riding his bike in circles around me with an expression on his face that screamed "I'm gonna rape you later." Once the train took off, and I had my headphones off I felt better. That relief grew the closer we got to Union station. Once there, I checked in, got my ticket and then waited... again. It was better this time though because there were comfortable seats, lots of people to look at, and it didn't smell like a musty old underground tube. (I also ran into my friend Nick on the platform! What a nice surprise). The ride down to SD wasn't bad at all, it seemed to go quite quick. At the station, I decided to walk to NerdHQ instead of taking the trolly. It seemed so close, but it was really hot and so the walk wasn't as awesome as I hoped, but I made it. I wasn't scheduled to work until night time, but I wanted to check in with Wendy anyway and rest for a while. I got situated and helped with things and then Wendy said I should go to her hotel and take a nap or rest, which wasn't something I was about to turn down. Since I was heading to the hotel anyway I was also asked to take Dominic Monaghan's bags to the hotel and get him checked into his room, and make sure his luggage made it into his room. It turned out to be a bit of on ordeal as Joshua Gomez decided to take the room that was assigned to Dom in the system and me walking in on them in what could have been a horribly awkward moment, but once it was squared away it worked out just fine. I didn't have time to nap much though as I had to head back to the convention center. I got in the elevator and there was a man there holding the cutest dog and had the cutest baby in one of those baby-holder backpack things. Between the super cute pup and the cute baby I didn't really notice the man's face, but once he started talking to me I realized I knew that voice. It was Thomas Lennon. In the short elevator ride he managed to be sweet, funny and super charming. I've met celebrities for longer periods of time who couldn't make such a good impression.
The rest of my afternoon was spent at NerdHQ, hanging out with a lot of the amazing Red Shirt crew. That night was the Nerd Party and I was in charge of VIP entrance, which basically turned into a cluster fuck of people who weren't on the list who should have been, and people who weren't on the list who never should have been but tried to bullshit their way in anyway, and a lot of dick measuring contests between people and the security and it was insane. I met some really amazing folks though who were so patient and accommodating. Several people offered to buy me a drink if I ever made it inside. One couple decided they would come back when the line calmed down and asked if they could bring me back some ice cream, which I thought was sweet. One guy asked for my twitter handle so he could tweet that I was the nicest person he met at Comic-con. (which he did!). Along with handful of nice people were the several handfuls of not-so-nice folks, and a few downright douche bags. One guy who didn't even know what the party was for, or who Zachary Levi was (Oh, he's just the person who put on the party, who owns The Nerd Machine and who created NerdHQ), but he insisted he should be on the list just because he's press. When I told him press was not invited to this party he got angry, called me a cunt and told me I didn't know anything. (I later mentioned it to Zac and he got upset by it and told me I should have taken his name, which makes sense, but at the time I just wanted him to walk away, which he eventually did). By the time I was able to go upstairs, I decided I didn't want to anymore. The door slowed down finally around 2am. The party was to go on until 4am, and I was crazy busy from the time doors opened at 9pm up until 2am. Just as I was taking a breather I look up and realize Alexander Skarsgard had gotten in the line. Just behind him I see a small mob running after him down the street. I grab his arm and ask him how many total is in his party and I quickly get him and his party escorted upstairs. I did not want to deal with a crazy mob. I had already gotten pushed around and nearly hit by an autograph seeker trying to strong arm past me to get to Eliza Dushku. I was happy that none of the bigger celebrities I helped get in were rude at all. Felicia Day and Colin Ferguson were super nice about how crazy it was and I really appreciated it.
When the lines calmed down, I sat down at the curb with some of my friends for a little while. I decided around 2:30 to head upstairs and try to enjoy the party. There wasn't a whole lot of people left upstairs when I got up there. I went out to the back patio where I ended up meeting Elijah Wood, who was sweet, and met a few friends up there. By the time I got back into the bar area I just wasn't feeling it, so I called Joyce and Karen back, and found out they were still just right outside, and I went downstairs to meet them, and we ended up on the corner of the block with Alexander Skarsgard who was pretty drunk, but still super charming, super adorable and really sweet. He thanked me for getting him into the party so quickly and then expressed his sadness that they weren't serving alcohol past 2am, even though the party was going until 4. We talked for a while, took some pictures and then we parted ways. Walking up the street we ran into Justin Chatwin, who I just love, and I got to talk to him for a bit and snag a photo. Elijah Wood was then leaving the party and he said goodbye to me and then took photos with Joyce and Karen. I ended up staying with Karen at her hotel because she is incredible and let me stay.
It was a really, really long first day for me, but it certainly made me appreciate the hot shower and few hours of sleep in a bed I got that night.
