4.30.11

Still recovering, I decided to just watch movies today. I'm already over hearing about all the Roayl Wedding stuff and found the best way to avoid it is to watch movies. I had the movie The Ghost and The Darkness on my DVR. It's one of my favorite movies and so I decided to watch it. While watching it, I thought of another Val Kilmer movie I loved - The Saint. Once The Ghost and The Darkness was over I found my DVD copy of The Saint and I watched it. When it was over I browsed my DVDs to find something else to watch. I grabbed Willow* because I realized it had been years since I had sat down and watched it the whole way through. I started laughing as I put the DVD in as it occurred to me that Val Kilmer was also in Willow. I watched it once through and then turned off my telly to read. My roommate had friends over and they were being quite loud, so it was hard for me to concentrate. I turned on my telly again and watched the special features on the DVD, and then decided to watch it again with commentary. I can hear you laughing. Stop! It was a really entertaining commentary! Anyhow, I thought there was no better way to remember this day than to capture the once-hot Val Kilmer on screen.

*- Side note: James Horner wrote the score to Willow and it is still to this day one of my favorite movie scores of all time. It's pretty brilliant.

Got so caught up building my desk yesterday that I forgot about these until I went to empty the Ikea bag. Great find for under $2 each!

Here is a preview of the second French memo board I made for my Aunt and Uncle's wedding anniversary. I haven't finished sewing on all of the buttons. See how much more muted this one is compared to the other one? I got this fabric because it has some color in the flowers but ultimately stays cohesive with the rest of the house. I still haven't decided which one to give her. I am still thinking that I will let her decide. Maybe I will give her the bright flowery one and if she makes a stinky face then I'll say just kidding and give her the other one. I always stress when it comes to giving gifts. Especially to my Aunt who used to be notorious for returning things. Hopefully she will like whichever one I decide to give her.

Went to Jon's for the first time. It's just down the street from my apartment and was less crowded than the local Ralph's. I never wanted to go to Jon's because I always thought it was a poor mans Vons, but I went, and I will likely never go again. You would think all the food in there is free, but only for the next 5 minutes with the way people were running around, recklessly controlling their trolley. There were so many people in the meat department, when the butcher came over to restock the meat area it looked as though a mama bird was feeding her young, people were quite grabby. The selection left something to be desired and the prices weren't great either. Sorry Ralph's, I will never cheat on you again.

Tonight I made a French memo board. I had already bought 2 different kids of fabric and ribbon but needed to go to a different store to get buttons. Then I found this fabric, fell in love and had to have it. So i bought it with matching ribbon and buttons. So now I had 3 kinds of fabric with coordinating ribbon and buttons to make my Aunt and Uncle one memo board. I decided to make this one first. I love it. I love love love it, but my Aunt is afraid of color. Her walls are a light latte color, her carpets a beautiful brown (see any picture of Keira or Cooper and you'll likely see her carpet color). Her couches are brown, her recliner is brown, her dog is brown! Everything is neutrals! This would be an insane pop of color, and I don't like it in this frame so I will either re-faux finish this frame with darker tones or Ill just get a new frame. I'm still afraid she will be overwhelmed by all the color. So I'll make another one and I'll let her choose (but not now, now it is bedtime!)

This morning I went to Ojai to see my cousin, spend time with Keira and gather some of my Aunt and Uncle's wedding pictures so that I could print out my own copies. I am making them a big french memo board and wanted to put some of their wedding photos on it when I give it to them. Keira, my little monkey was having fun with the container that holds brothers cars. She was playing peek-a-boo with me.

Tonight I went to Hollywood to the 2nd Stage Theatre to sit in on a rehearsal for the play The Cost Of Erection. It was a great script, and had 4 amazing actors, including Justin Kirk who is known for his role as Andy on Weeds. Despite it being book in hand, it had a great flow and was really quite entertaining. (And before you make penis jokes, yes, it was a play on words but was really more about 2 architects and their wives, and less about penises, though they did come into play). The sit-in rehearsals are called the Living Room Series and The Blank Theatre Company does them every Monday night. I definitely think I will be going to more. I love The Blank Theatre Company and I love the 2nd Stage Theatre.

I sewed today for the first time in a while. Made curtains for my bathroom. They turned out pretty awesome! I sewed in a black lining that doesnt completely black out the bathroom, it lets in just enough light to illuminate the colors of the printed fabric. I'm happy! I took some pictures along the way that I may write a blog article about but I don't think many people really care how I made my curtains.

Even though Keira didn't go to Noli's birthday party yesterday, Megan (Shep's beautiful wife) gave us a goodie bag for her. Keira loves loves loves to wear glasses, so when she finally discovered them she put them on immediately. Then she stole brothers! My goodness she slays me.

Today I went to Camp Comfort Park in Oak View to go to Magnolia's 2nd birthday party. Noli is my good friend Shep's youngest of two daughters. His older daughter, Jacaranda, is in pre-school with Cooper. Jac and Cooper are best friends, so my cousin Jennifer and Cooper came along. It was such a great time to see the kids running around and playing and having a great time. It was pretty nostalgic. In this picture, Cooper was being chased by Jac and Noli and tried to find refuge in the bouncy castle but they came and tackled him. He got away from Noli easy enough but as you can see Jac wasn't going to give up so easy. I can't wait til I have kids of my own, but for now I get to enjoy spending time with my cousins kids.

Gulden, one of the comedians that perform at First Fridays at Cafe Muse sat at our table tonight. It was packed! Definitely one of the best First Fridays we've been to. Afterwards Tabin, Lisa and I hit up Mexicali.
